Preventive Dentistry

Preventive dentistry is the practice of caring for your teeth to avoid cavities, gum disease and enamel wear. Daily brushing and flossing are an important part of preventative dentistry as are routine dental visits for cleaning and dental exams.

Your preventative care dental appointments will help the dentist detect early signs of gum disease and early stages of tooth decay. Catching these issues early helps prevent complex and costly dental procedures down the road.

A preventative dental appointment may include:

  • Examination of your teeth and supporting structures (this may include x-rays)

  • A scaling (cleaning) of your teeth to remove tartar and plaque build up

  • Polishing your teeth to remove stain

  • Application of desensitizing or remineralizing agents

  • Personalized advice on home care products

Every patient is different, but generally we recommend preventative dental appointments take place every six months.

Restorative Dentistry

Restorative dentistry is used to rehabilitate and improve the function and structure of your teeth. It is used in cases where teeth are compromised in some way and preventative dental care will not be enough to repair the damage.

Restorative dentistry includes:

  • Fillings

The most common way to treat a cavity is fillings. Dr. Peeters will remove the decay and fill your tooth with one of several choices of materials. Choices include tooth-coloured composite resins, fluoride releasing glass ionomers or silver amalgams.

  • Onlays and Crowns

If the cavity is large enough to severely impact tooth integrity, a filling may not be the best long term choice. In situations such as this we may recommend the option of an onlay or full coverage crown. Choices of materials can be tooth coloured ceramic, zirconia or gold.

An onlay replaces the damaged tooth structure and extends out over one or more of the cusp tips. If the damage is not extensive enough to require a crown, onlays are a good alternative.

A crown is a permanent covering that fits over an original tooth that is decayed, damaged or cracked. They restore its shape, appearance and function. Crowns can also be used to cover discoloured or misshapen teeth, be placed over a root canal or a large filling. A tooth that has been fixed with a crown functions, looks and feels pretty much like a natural tooth.

Esthetic Dentistry

Esthetic dentistry (also known as cosmetic) offers options to help improve the appearance of your smile. We offer consultations to discuss with you what can be done to help you obtain the smile you want.

This can include:

  • Treatments to make the teeth brighter through in office or at home whitening

  • Changing the size and shape of the teeth

  • Repairing decayed, broken, or chipped teeth

  • Replacing missing teeth

  • Changing the alignment of your teeth

  • Replacing old, unattractive fillings and crowns

  • Improving the contour and symmetry of your gums

Seniors

Dental Health – Even More Important as We Age!

Changes in our health, side effects of medications and simple wear and tear all take their toll on our oral health. Due to a number of health factors, seniors may be more susceptible to dental disease such as root decay and gum disease. Adults over the age of 60 are also at a greater risk of being diagnosed with oral cancer.

Taking care of your dental health becomes even more important as we age and preventing dental diseases is important to your quality of life. We are here to help!

Children

Helping Little Ones Smile for Life

We want every child to enjoy a lifetime of good dental health. The Canadian Academy for Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child be seen by a dentist as early as their first birthday and begin the routine of seeing Dr. Peeters every 6 months after that to ensure appropriate dental cleaning and cavity prevention practices while little ones grow bigger.

Dr. Peeters is well-known for her calm and gentle ways with children of all ages. In fact, little people are some of our favourite patients.

We know positive early experiences at the dentist are a vital part of encouraging lifelong dental health in our children. That is why we aim to make dental visits fun for all ages!

We take extra time with our younger patients and offer iPads with Netflix cartoons and movies to help distract and comfort them during their treatments.

Our staff is friendly, approachable and have plenty of experience working with children. We focus on giving your child the oral hygiene skills they’ll need for lifelong dental health!

Emergency Dental Care

Dr. Peeters works diligently to prioritize emergency visits and will provide both short term and long-term solutions to any dental emergency.
Call our office if you have a dental emergency so that we help minimize your pain and get you back to health as quickly as possible.
